Venice day two

We spent two full days in Venice. On day two we purchased all-day water bus tickets and headed straight for San Marco's Square. It was pretty crowded and a bit chilly, but we enjoyed the beautiful views and the sunshine:

Back home in Germany, it still felt like winter, so the girls enjoyed the sunshine as much as they could:

St. Mark's Basilica was so beautiful. Tradition states that in the year 828, Venetian merchants stole the remains/relics of Saint Mark from Alexandria, Egypt and smuggled them here:

We spent the rest of the day traveling around Venice by boat. Here are some views from the Grand Canal:

We stopped off at Santa Maria della Salute for some lunch on the stairs:

This church is typically called La Salute. It started being built in 1631. The Senate decided to build it to honor the Virgin Mary for delivering Venice from a plague. It took over 50 years to complete, and according to the church's Google+ website, it is the only great baroque monument built in Italy outside of Rome:

We took another boat across the lagoon to the little island of San Giorgio Maggiore. We enjoyed the views of St. Mark's Square:

We spent the rest of the afternoon riding on the water bus around the outside of Venice in the lagoon. It was a wonderful, relaxing day:

My boys loved the pigeons in St Marks square. There were lots of signs saying not to feed the birds but everyone else was doing it so I figured it would be OK. The birds came and landed right on their arms, and heads and backs...it was pretty fun.
