After we returned home from our Spring Break getaway and the older kids were back in school, Grandma (since the older kids aren't around, I think I can call her by her name now) Susan and I took a few little day-trips. We started off with a trip to Flossenbürg.
On the way there, we stopped off to see a Jewish cemetery from the 1600's. This is especially neat considering that Susan's ancestors were Jews. Her family tree reaches across the Czech Republic, which border literally touches the town of Flossenbürg:
We then headed over the the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp. Here is Susan in front of the prison headquarters building:
I have posted about Flossenbürg from previous visits, so I won't go too much into the history. If you want to read a good article about it, I recommend the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum website here.
I stayed outside with David most of the time, while Susan went inside the buildings. David gathered leaves:
There is always a sadness that hangs over me when I visit this place or places like it. It is the sadness and darkness that comes with intolerance, abuse, and pride. I think it is important for everyone to learn about the awful consequences of such behavior. I am very grateful for a loving Father in Heaven that can lift that sadness and darkness when we ask. Otherwise, I would never be able to visit this type of place.
We also saw this super cute tiny chapel on the side of the road. Germany is so pretty:
