Stone Mountain

While we were in Atlanta, we decided to go visit Stone Mountain, a place my sister-in-law (a native Georgian) had recommended. It was fun with Chanda, her sisters, and their families. Take a look.

Stone mountain is a huge (really, it is enormous) granite rock. The granite from the adjoining quarry has been used in several famous places such as the federal gold depository at Fort Knox, the Panama Canal, and the foundation of the Lincoln Memorial. There is a huge carving on the front of the rock/mountain. It was begun in 1915 when a sculptor drew up some sketches for the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It was started and stopped many times, and wasn't completed until 1972.

We hiked the one mile trek to the top. It was a fun and steep walk. We saw a gum tree and some cool dedications carved into the stone from the 1800's. Quite the contrast.

The view of Atlanta from the top was fun. We were so high, it felt like we were flying:

New friends rolling down a hill

My good friend from Germany now lives in Hawaii. And I live in Georgia.

This month, Chanda flew to Atlanta to visit her sisters. And I came to Atlanta to see Chanda. I was so excited to spend time with my deployment battle buddy and meet her awesome sisters in the process. We spent the weekend with Chanda and her kids Oaklee and Lincoln (we missed you Tye), Holly and Cameron and their four fun kids, and Char visiting from Texas.

Cameron and Holly showed us the best way to enjoy their steep front yard. Take a look!

Even David had had turn, though he fell out halfway down the hill. See the arm?
