Stone Mountain

While we were in Atlanta, we decided to go visit Stone Mountain, a place my sister-in-law (a native Georgian) had recommended. It was fun with Chanda, her sisters, and their families. Take a look.

Stone mountain is a huge (really, it is enormous) granite rock. The granite from the adjoining quarry has been used in several famous places such as the federal gold depository at Fort Knox, the Panama Canal, and the foundation of the Lincoln Memorial. There is a huge carving on the front of the rock/mountain. It was begun in 1915 when a sculptor drew up some sketches for the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It was started and stopped many times, and wasn't completed until 1972.

























We hiked the one mile trek to the top. It was a fun and steep walk. We saw a gum tree and some cool dedications carved into the stone from the 1800's. Quite the contrast.
