The Eagle's Nest

While we were in Berchtesgaden, we had to see the Eagle's Nest, the infamous site owned by Hitler on a mountain peak overlooking Germany and Austria.

To get to the top of the mountain, we had to ride a bus. That bus ride was one of the scariest rides of my life. We drove up switchbacks on a super steep climb, and those dang bus drivers were probably going 60 miles per hour. I truly was not certain we would survive the drive.

At the top (after I got my land-legs back), we walked through a long tunnel to an elevator that took us to the very top. Although it was a beautiful day, we were so high that the mountain peak was engulfed in clouds. We struggled to see the valleys below and (at times) each other.

I had thought that Hilter used this place as his headquarters, but I learned otherwise. Here is a quick snippet of information from www.eagles-nest-tours.com:

The Eagle’s Nest was built as a teahouse for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday. Perched on a mountain summit, its unusual position makes the daring project a unique engineering feat. What few realize is that Hitler’s home and headquarters - the second seat of 3rd Reich power - were located at Obersalzberg, at the foot of the Eagle’s Nest mountain.
