On the way home from our whirlwind 4th of July vacation, we decided to swing through Köln (Cologne). Köln is believed to be the oldest city in Germany (according to Wikipedia, it is one of three cities that claims/debates this fact). It was founded around 38 BC. It has a strong Roman history.
Cologne Cathedral is the huge focal point of this beautiful city. It was first built between 1248 and 1473, but remained unfinished until 1880.
We wandered around the city and crossed the bridge to get a view from a distance. I loved the locks covering the bridge. Couples from all over the world commit their love to one another by placing a lock on the bridge and throwing away the key. So their love can never be unlocked.

We noticed several people dressed strangely in the city, men in women's clothing and women in almost no clothing. One group of men were dressed as a priest and nuns... sort of.
It turns out the city of Köln was hosting a gay pride parade. We saw the biggest part of the parade on a far off bridge. It opened a healthy dialogue with our kids about relationships and trends in the world today. We didn't stay long enough to require a conversation on the full scope of the birds and the bees.
